 "ALUMINUM WIRING???" 2010-05-08
By G. Crain (Houston, TX United States)
I have no experience using this cooktop. However, I just installed it. (Actually, I installed its sister, but with stainless trim on the sides.)
There are two gigantic issues:
1) Watch the dimensions of the cooktop very closely. I mis-measured my existing cut-out or mis-read the Whirlpool literature and ended up having to cut my Corian countertop (do-able, but very difficult, messy, and time-consuming).
2) THIS COOKTOP HAS ALUMINUM WIRING!!! I find that absolutely astonishing! I'm a real diy-er; I've completely re-done the electrical in our house in Houston, TX. However, I have have no experience connecting aluminum to copper. I know it's messy and easy to screw up. Thus, I get to call an electrician to do this for me. I find it inconceivable that Whirlpool would have aluminum wiring on this unit. I would triple-check before I buy this or any of their other units.

"Black glass is just bad" 2009-06-04
By skinnytoe (Midwest)
Whoever decided that black glossy glass is a good material to use for a cook top is an idiot. This particular cook top is actually dark red semi transparent ceramic glass, but it looks black from a distance.

So far as making kitchen cleaning easier, glossy black cook tops actually accomplish the opposite. Every little speck of dust, smudge and smear screams out under light, making daily cleaning a necessity if you are a "neat freak." Also, these things are not easy to clean. I have tried about 6 different special cleaning products made especially for glass cook tops. They are all difficult to wipe off and leave a persistent haze. I've found a dampened microfiber towel works best to help remove the haze. Compared to my old electric coil cook top, the glossy black glass cook top requires much more time and attention to keep it looking clean enough to cook on.

As far as performance, I do not notice any significant difference in cooking time or response vs my old coil style cook top. This particular cook top is not very flexible. The more expensive models often have a dual size burner and touch controls instead of knobs. The knobs are hard to clean around.

These things look good as long as you clean them daily, or keep them in the dark. Otherwise, they are just too much trouble to clean and offer no performance advantages over the old electric coil style cook tops.

Next time I'm getting a stainless steel gas cook top.
